UN Summit on Plastic Ends Without Agreement

Expectations were high: binding, global commitments to significantly reduce the production of new plastics. If no action is taken, plastic production is expected to triple by 2060. However, at the first-ever UN “plastic summit” held in South Korea earlier this month, over 100 countries failed to reach an agreement to prevent this scenario. The main roadblock? Oil-producing nations, prioritizing profits, resisted measures that could limit plastic production—a lucrative byproduct of their industries.
