The Vliet Clean SUP
A work out and a clean-up in one: that is the Vliet Clean SUP that starts on Tuesday 24 August in Leiden. The Ocean Movement adds a scientific element to this unique project.
The Vliet Clean SUP is a project of Stichting Naar Buiten! and Stichting Techniekmenu. In the last week of the summer holidays, young members (aged 10-15) of various water scouting associations will board sups and clean up litter from the Vliet.
The Clean SUP not only focuses on visible waste, but also focuses on the invisible microplastics. In collaboration with WaterLab from the Technische Universiteit Delft and The Ocean Movement, a pilot will be done with a mini-Manta Trawl (a dragnet to catch microplastics), adapted for use behind a sup. This is the first step towards developing a solid monitoring strategy of microplastics in fresh waters with the help of citizens (citizen science). Clean Sup’s activities will be organized over a multi-year and scaled up to other cities.
From Leiden via The Hague to Delft
The Vliet Clean SUP starts on Tuesday 24 August in Leiden. The first leg goes from the center of Leiden to recreation area Vlietland. Plastic soup surfer Merijn Tinga will participate as special guest. The youngsters are accompanied by experienced instructors from SUPBinckies, supervisors of water scouting associations in boats and a special yellow boat in the form of a wooden shoe (Klomp), the mascot of the World Sailing Championships in The Hague in 2022 and 2023.
On 25 August the second leg will run from Vlietland to Voorburg. The third leg on 26 August will go from Voorburg to The Hague. On 27 August the last leg will go from The Hague to Delft where the finish will take place.
